Maleficent, Header and creepy dude

23.06.2014:

Study-time! I'm still trying to get the hang of values as well as skin. So here it goes. Angelina Jolie has such a cool nose and sensual lips. It's not from this world :3

photo study (photoshop cc)

Next I started out with a sketch for a header. Did a few versions. Let's see when I will finish it and with what version...

I really really don't wanna show you this. But I promised to document everything here. EVERYTHING! So here it goes. It's really awful. I already was burned out and hungry when I started it and that's exactly how it looks. I still am not good at painting faces from imagination but I'm also not THAT bad^^

Testing out an art style

22.06.2014:

Big disclaimer upfront: This isn't my art style. I just wanted to try out something new and see what I like and don't like about it. I try to look up the original artist, because her paintings are amazeballs.

After I drew the face of my character based on her faces I kinda got the hang of the skin color and then colored the rest of my characters body out of my imagination. My original sketch you can find here.

I really like the skin and her lips but her eyes are way to doll like. They creep me out quite a bit :D :D

sketch from imagination, face rending = study, body rendering = applying what I learned (photoshop cc)

The second sketch I drew a few hours later to see how much I still remember. The skin isn't as smooth but I like her face overall much more. Less creepy.

I think trying out different styles which you like will help you grow as an artist. Because you will only adapt and keep elements you like. For example certain color combinations, shape of the lips, etc. That way you still can create your own style. As long as you don't copy other peoples art one to one and claim it to be your own I think it's a great learning experience.

Material study - Stone

08.03.2013:

Hi guys, today I tried to understand the material stone a little bit better. And I also tried new shading techniques thanks to a friend of mine. Really like how the last one came out :)

Couldn't concentrate...

30.10.2012:

This is one of these days I don't wanna show what I did, because it sucks. BUT I promised myself to upload every crappy sketch to keep myself motivated in the long run and maybe show others, that there always are good and bad days :3 So keep drawing guys!

Color studies

29.10.2012:

She is totally off, but the main target were colors so it's ok for me^^ Also without underlying lineart to train my painting skills.

color study from photo reference (photoshop cs5; 45min)

In this second one I traced the outline and then tried to pick the right colors again. Also trying to not get into details, but simply put colors on with the standard round brush :)

I'm back!

Oh my gosh, I can't believe it's over three month since I posted here... but fortunately I have a good excuse :3 Since first of july I'm having an internship as a concept artist in a small company here in germany. So I'm drawing and painting eight hours a day. Bad thing is, I'm under NDA so I can't show you any of it. Not now at least. But after two month working there, I think I found my routine and I can go back to continue my studies without falling asleep after 5 minutes^^

PS: I did some sketches during the last month and when I finally found them I will put them to the right dates... I'm such a chaotic...

Getting things done...maybe

I thought maybe it would help me to improve faster, if I would finish one little piece everyday. Nothing fancy. Simply getting things done. So here is my first approach on that....I think I will refine it a little bit more tomorrow xD

21.05.2012:
b/w; concentrating on values (photoshop cs4)

first approach on color (photoshop cs4)

In the evening I read through a concept art sketchbook and tried to draw everything to what it inspired me...some stuff is reffed, some from mind. Look for the little "ref" and "imag" if you wanna know what is what :P

the girls are reffed; the rest from mind (pencil)

perspective exercises and heads from mind (pencil)

all from mind; like the one on the left (pencil)

some eye studies and heads from mind (pencil)

the big guy in the middle and the little creature in the top right are reffed (pencil)

the silhouette, the bunny and the gnome in the right are reffed; I know I broke the neck by the girl in the middle :/ (pencil)

all from mind and pretty crappy (pencil)
